5 Reasons to Spend 5 Minutes Learning Every Day

If we’re honest with ourselves, we probably all want to be smarter, but learning something new can seem like a major task. The problem is that we often start our learning journey by setting over-ambitious learning goals. But our starting point doesn’t need to be learning a new language or mastering a new skill. We don’t even need to pursue those things at all if we don’t want to. We can get smarter simply, just by spending a few minutes a day learning something new.

There are millions of topics to delve into, and we can wade as deep as we want to go, or just skim the surface to get a brief understanding. Learning is a lifelong journey, and there are many reasons to spend time doing it every day. Here are five we came up with:

1. Take a Focus Break

Taking five to learn something new can be a good way to distract yourself after a period of focus. You can equip yourself with a new skill in the same amount of time it would take you to write and send a Tweet. Come on, what’s the point of Twitter anyway? You’ll feel better when you put your brain power into something meaningful.

2. Make Life Easier

There are two types of life hacks out there: the ones that are super simple but have a relatively small impact on how we live, and the ones that take a bit to get the trick of but can make a major difference to our long-term success.

These “learning” life hacks fall into the latter category; when you take just a few minutes of your day to learn and practice them, you can make major improvements to your focus, your time management, your organization and productivity—the list goes on! Which brings us to our next point:

3. Build Habits

Have you ever wondered what all the hype’s about when it comes to studying the habits of successful people? Well successful people build good habits, and you could even say that good habits in turn build successful people.

Making learning a daily priority is the first habit you should build into your life; once you take this first step, your learning journey will equip you with all sorts of skills which you can add to your arsenal of habits. Good habits help you tackle your workflow like a pro and accelerate your personal growth.

4. Reset Your Brain

Sometimes something as simple as a change of subject can completely reset your brain and help you get through your day. Why not make that change of subject something that’s not just a meaningless distraction, but something that will benefit you?

Learning something new can make you feel accomplished and prepare you to tackle anything else that gets thrown your way in the run of a day. Plus taking your mind off work to learn new things can help you stay open to new ideas and put you in a creative frame of mind.

5. The More You Know

As hard skills continue to get farmed out to computers, employers are desperately looking for talented people with soft skills in abundance. The more learning you do daily, the more soft skills you can build. The more you can draw on what you’ve learned and how you’ve applied it to your life when you sit down for an interview, the better your chances are of getting hired!

Final Thoughts

Committing to learning every day puts you in a growth mindset from the outset of your day and helps your brain make new connections. A learning break can spark a breakthrough if you’re having a tough day, or help you build the habit of building good habits.

And you might be glad to know that learning doesn’t always have to be done in school or through a boring 10-session online course. You can use Brightspot to gain more knowledge and more skills in just a few minutes everyday, and when you do, you’ll get access to free tools that seamlessly integrate into your schedule to help you be more productive at work and take care of yourself at work and at home.
